Fractional CGO vs. fractional CMO: which does your DTC brand need?

A fractional CMO runs marketing. A fractional Chief Growth Officer owns the whole growth system: acquisition, conversion, retention, and the team and agencies underneath. If your constraint sits between functions, you need the second.

Why the difference is bigger in DTC

In B2B, a CGO sits across marketing, sales, and customer success. In a DTC brand there is no sales team. The handoff that breaks is between acquiring a customer and keeping one.

A CMO can buy first orders efficiently and still leave the business losing money, if subscribers churn before they pay back their CAC. Fixing that takes someone who owns both sides.

When to hire a fractional CMO

    • Your retention and unit economics are healthy, but awareness or creative is the limit
    • You are rebranding or launching a new product line
    • You already have a strong growth or retention lead

When to hire a fractional CGO

    • CAC is rising and nobody can say which channels drive lifetime value
    • Paid, retention, and creative agencies work from different plans
    • Subscribers churn before they pay back
    • You're adding Amazon or retail and need each channel to have a clear job

What I do as a fractional CGO

I've held both titles: CMO and co-founder at Reel Paper, Head of Growth at PrettyLitter, and Chief Growth Officer at Hiya Health. Today I work as a fractional CGO with $5M+ subscription and DTC brands, starting with a 14-day growth audit to find the constraint.

    FAQ

Only if marketing is all that reports into the role. The difference is ownership of retention, offers, and unit economics.

Yes, at most $5M to $50M DTC brands. That is the point of the fractional CGO model.
